Tales From Our Home
Tales From Our Home is another project I contributed to recently by researching and writing the early history of the Dogs’ Refuge Home in Shenton Park.
In October 2015, the Dogs’ Refuge Home in Shenton Park celebrates 80 years of giving dogs a second chance at life. In that time, it has rescued approximately 50,000 dogs that would otherwise have been put down.
Tales From Our Home has been produced to commemorate this remarkable achievement. Not only does it tell the story of a pioneering group of animal lovers who came together during the Great Depression to build a refuge for ‘waifs and strays’, but it also shares the stories of more than 80 rescue dogs.
My involvement has a personal note – our dog, Maple, is one of those 50,000 rescued dogs.
Copies of Tales From Our Home can be purchased from the Dogs’ Refuge Home, which is situated at 30 Lemnos Street, Shenton Park WA 6008. Alternatively, you can head to the Home’s website.
All proceeds go to supporting the work of the Dogs’ Refuge Home.
And remember: Rescue really is the best breed.
Thanks for your help with this Melinda. It was a real godsend having your knowledge on researching and assembling the historical ‘facts’ and particularly finding your way around the State Library! It’s a great start in what I hope will become an even larger project to really capture the amazing social movement that the Dogs’ Home has been in Western Australian life. It might just one of those invisible stories – although more fantastically visible than ever before! Thanks
You’re welcome – it was very much a team effort and glad to have been involved. We certainly discovered some fascinating stories, of the people who started the Dogs’ Home, and the dogs that have been given a second chance.
